SC Suspends LHC Judgment on Ravi Riverfront Project Case

Apex News

Last Monday, the noble Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan suspended the Lahore High Court's (LHC) judgment to abandon the government's Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project and allowed the government to start again construction work on the land where the owners had been given compensation.

The LHC, on January 25, had shocked the government by asserting various provisions of its Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) Act 2020 felonious and invalid.

"Section 4 of the RUDA (amendment) Ordinance 2021 is contrary to Article 144 of the Constitution," the LHC said. "The acquirement notification of Section 4 is illegal."

Later on, on January 28, PM Khan had said his government would head towards the apex court to contest the decision of LHC. "The case would be displayed in a better way to bring to the court's attention the scheme's significance in view of urban development and civic facilities," the premier said.

A 3-member bench headed by Justice Ijazul Ahsan heard the suit filed by the Punjab Government yesterday and revoked the verdict of Lahore High Court. The Justice remarked that the construction could resume on the portion of land where the landowners had been compensated. However, the SC's decision obstructed the authorities from any construction work on land where actual owners were yet to be paid.
