According to recent news, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to establish the terms of reference (TORs) for a comprehensive review of the Lahore Master Plan 2050.
The news also stated the LHC had directed the LDA to appoint a focal person specifically for this task and had ordered to temporarily halt the implementation of the Lahore Master Plan 2050. Justice Shahid Karim issued these orders during the hearing of a petition filed by Abdul Rehman and others who sought to challenge the plan.
The petitioners argue that the plan has unjustifiably converted agricultural land into urban areas. They express concerns that if the plan is executed, there will be destruction of trees on a large scale. They said this land conversion would lead to further environmental deterioration in Lahore.
The Lahore High Court wants to make sure that the review of the Lahore Master Plan 2050 is thorough and well-informed, so it has told the LDA to work with the Urban Development Unit and come up with TORs. This step shows how important it is to think about the effect on the environment and address the petitioners' concerns.
